Film as a Subversive Art ist ein einstündiges filmisches Porträt von Amos Vogel, dem Gründer des New Yorker Filmfestivals und dem bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten amerikanischen Filmclub 'Cinema 16'. Er musste 1938 aus Österreich in die USA emigrieren und lebt heute 82-jährig in New York. Wenngleich er selbst nicht einen einzigen Film gemacht hat, war Amos Vogel doch eine bahnbrechende Kraft für die Verbreitung des europäischen und asiatischen Films in den USA und darüber hinaus – ganz zu schweigen von seiner Förderung der amerikanischen Avantgarde. Film as a Subversive Art zeigt, wie Vogel Amerikas größten Filmclub ins Leben rief und sechzehn Jahre lang leitete. Er zeigt auch, wie das private und öffentliche Leben eines Menschen, der ein solches Leben wählt, miteinander verbunden sind. An hour-long filmed profile of Amos Vogel, 82- year old New York resident and Austrian emigré, founder of the New York Film Festival and America’s most important film society, Cinema 16. In 1947, Amos Vogel established a film club in New York called Cinema 16, the most important and influential film society in American history. At its height it boasted thousands of members, inspired a nationwide network of smaller film societies, and gave birth to the very rich tradition of post-war film culture that still exists in the United States. Paul Cronin: ”Film as a Subversive Art: Amos Vogel and Cinema 16 is the story of an unsung hero of world cinema. Though he never made any films himself, Amos Vogel was a pioneering force in the exhibition and distribution of European and Asian cinema in the United States and beyond, to say nothing of his advancement of the American avantgarde. Film as a Subversive Art – the title is taken from Vogel's own 1974 book – shows how he created and ran for 16 years what became America’s largest film club. It shows how, should he choose it, every element of a man’s life, private and public, are linked. This film is not going to revolutionise the documentary form, but hopefully it might spark something in a young filmmaker who suspects there is, to use Vogel's words, 'another world of cinema' out there.”
