Ich habe meine Videokamera und mein Japanischlexikon eingepackt und bin nach Japan geflogen, habe das typische Leben einer Rucksackreisenden in Tokio gelebt und die Begegnungen aufgezeichnet. Daraus ist eine persönliche Dokumentation entstanden über einen Teilausschnitt japanischer Realität. Der Film wirft ein anderes Licht auf Japaner. Sie scheinen weniger fremd und distanziert. |

Among back-packing travellers Japan has the reputation of being a good spot for quick money: get a job, work for three months, and then get on with your travels. Tokyo's entertainment district comprises a fair niche for illegal work: waitressing, being a kitchen-hand and hostessing. With some money, a Japanese dictionary and a video-camera in my pocket, I took a flight to Tokyo and found work in an 'International Hostess-Club'. You have ìto look pretty, talk, pour drinks, sing Karaoke and dance with your customersì - a weird job! After hours, I'd meet hostesses from other clubs, we'd chat about the job: A hostess-club is a perfectly respectable place - except for a sexual undertone, of course. I took the camera into my club on Christmas, and filmed the singing, dancing and merriment. (...and consequently got fired.) I explored Tokyo and met Japanese - who are a very nice and warm people.
