Satyajit Ray (* 2 May 1921 in Kolkata; † 23 April 1992 ibid.) developed a humanistic film style all his own, inspired by the neorealism of French and Italian cinema. Ray was often involved in casting as well as cinematography, editing, music and production in his productions. His debut Pather Panchali (1955) already brought him - and for the first time Indian cinema - worldwide recognition. Ray made 36 films, including documentaries and shorts. He also worked as a writer, editor, illustrator, composer, graphic designer and film critic.
