The State Film Documentation (SFD) was a division of film production within the East German State Film Archives (SFA). Between 1972 and 1985, it produced 320 films that are currently being digitized by the German Federal Archives in order to make them accessible to a broader audience. The director of the film division of the archives, Petra Rauschenbach, will talk about the scope and progress of the project. A discussion will follow with SFD founder and former director of the SFA Wolfgang Klaue, as well as two former SFD employees, Peter Badel and Holm Henning Freier, about the context within which the films were made, and the practical challenges faced by the people who made them. The event will be chaired by Ina Merkel, who, among other things, has done research into the history of culture in East Germany.
