Based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Tadeusz Hołuj, Jakubowska returns to Auschwitz for a second time following THE LAST STAGE. Survivor Henryk takes two American tourists with him in his car to Auschwitz, who want to look at the museum there. Henryk is initially reluctant to show them the place, but does so anyway, with memories coming to the surface as a result. He was imprisoned there because he helped a woman in Warsaw who was being mistreated by a German police officer. In Auschwitz, he becomes a “Muselmann”, already doomed to die. With the help of several other prisoners, he is able to survive and joins the resistance. While the young American woman turns out to be the daughter of Jews murdered in the Holocaust, the man she’s travelling with is frighteningly superficial and stands for the ignorance of a new era.
