Werner Herzog stands alone in world cinema. With his around 70 features and documentaries, this legendary director with a disdain for standard categories has created a singular, visually striking oeuvre—early works within the orbit of New German Cinema, later Hollywood productions and idiosyncratic documentaries, which gave him the status of a popstar in his chosen home, the US. Thomas von Steinaecker’s portrait WERNER HERZOG – RADICAL DREAMER is dedicated to the biographical and cinematic stations in his life, shows Herzog at the waterfall of his childhood in Bavaria and on a journey to “the end of the world”. Alongside recollections and insights about his working processes, there are also interviews with those who have accompanied him along the way (Wim Wenders, Volker Schlöndorff, Thomas Mauch, Lucki Stipetić, Martje and Lena Herzog, Patti Smith, Nicole Kidman, Christian Bale, Robert Pattinson, Chloé Zhao, Joshua Oppenheimer and others) and excerpts from his films. Herzog’s motto for young filmmakers: doing the undoable. (Birgit Kohler)
