Abandoned by his friends and family, Gilberto seeks refuge with a priest. He is able to muster up courage, wins a singing competition, resumes his medical studies, and becomes a respected doctor. But the downside of his social success soon becomes apparent - Abreu paints his fall into alcoholism in somber tones.
