  • Lectured by Bert Rebhandl: „Ein Revolutionsfilm zwischen Universalismus und Patriotismus“ (ca. 30 Min.) On the piano: Eunice Martins

There were a number of different reasons for naming our cinema ARSENAL in January 1970. One of them was the 1929 silent film ARSENAL by the Ukrainian director Oleksandr Dovzhenko. We asked the author and film critic Bert Rebhandl to reexamine the film from today's perspective. The result is a comprehensive study and re-evaluation that we have published on our website with the title "Oleksandr Dovzhenko's Arsenal Revisited". "A revolutionary film between universalism and patriotism" is the title of the lecture Bert Rebhandl is now giving at Arsenal: "The film ARSENAL exposes a contradiction in Soviet revolutionary cinema regenerated in 2022 by Russia’s imperial war in Ukraine: Notes on the ‘present-ness’ of a classic." The screening of ARSENAL that follows the lecture will be accompanied by Eunice Martins on the piano.  (Stefanie Schulte Strathaus)
