Les Sénégalaises et la Sénégauloise

Alice Diop was born in France to Senegalese parents, who decades later wanted to be buried in their homeland. She traveled to Dakar for the first time with her father's remains - and initially felt like a stranger. She set up her camera in the courtyard of the house where her mother lived before leaving for France in 1966. Thus, she became familiar with the daily life of her aunts and cousins, defined by a responsibility for the care and cohesion of the family, by a lack of money and polygamy. Then she realized that she was filming the life she might have had if her mother had stayed in Senegal. (bik)
