Minnelli’s desire to shoot on location in Scotland failed due to bad weather; Gene Kelly’s idea of a Scottish Western fell victim to production costs. The eventual result of these initial difficulties is an amazingly stylized studio-shot Scotland fantasy about two Americans (Gene Kelly and Van Johnson) who get lost in the Scottish Highlands and end up in the village of Brigadoon, which doesn’t appear on any map. The hamlet exists entirely beyond time, enjoying the privilege of only appearing one day every 100 days, although the love that emerges between a young village beauty (Cyd Charisse) and one of the Americans turns out to be anything other than transient. The resulting magical song-and-dance numbers (choreographed by Gene Kelly) with glowing colorful décor and costumes are truly unforgettable.
