POIL DE CAROTTE is a children's drama set in the French province. The main character, called Poil de carotte because of his red hair, has an indifferent father (Henry Krauss), an unjust and spiteful mother (Charlotte Barbier-Krauss), and two good-for-nothing, yet disproportionately favored older siblings. The parents’ marriage is hopelessly broken. An intertitle characterizes the mother as a liar and a chatterbox. On top of that, like an unpredictable force of nature, the mean-spirited woman repeatedly lashes out against Poil de carotte, a lovable, lively child whose spirits are already systematically being driven out of him.
