António de Macedo's aesthetically bold literary adaptation DOMINGO À TARDE, a milestone of Novo Cinema defying state censorship, is a dense, intense, syncopated film. A doctor wants to save a terminally ill patient with whom he has fallen in love - the narrative in the world of the hospital mixes past and present, dialogues with inner commentaries, black and white with colors, "as if Macedo wanted to destroy the usual dramatic conventions and make this film a cinematographic essay." (Luís de Pina) A reflection on life in the presence of death. (bik)
