Of the many "zone" films of (post-)Soviet cinema, this symbolic and realistic, yet postmodern, perestroika film is one of the most disquieting. Wish fulfilment notwithstanding, late Soviet existence takes place between prison brutality and the interior of a giant monument of the hammer and sickle where a man seeks refuge. Totalitarianism, this film realizes, is in the elitist art of Swan Lake itself. (bw)
