The core of Ukrainian poetic cinema was significantly shaped by the worldly free spirit and Ukrainian by choice Parazhanov, who brought Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's eponymous Hutsul take on Romeo and Juliet to the big screen in an authentic way, not only igniting the spirit of liberating – and erotic - ecstasy - and lending dreams, visions, hallucinations and mysticism a cinematic existence, but also revolutionizing the language of film in terms of montage and narration. On camera is Yuri Ilyenko who moves it dynamically and in such a way that is congenial to Parazhanov's animated tableau style. (bw)
