Haile Gerima's film tells the story of Nay, a Black Vietnam War veteran who struggles to find his way back into everyday life. It goes from the streets of the ghetto to the monuments in Washington DC, where the protagonist's girlfriend, a Black Power activist, works, to Los Angeles and then to the rural south where his grandmother lives. She resists real estate speculators and preserves the memory of several generations of Black people who fought against slavery and segregation laws and continue to fight.
