On the occasion of her 80th birthday, the DEFA Foundation is dedicating a film evening to the actress Ursula Werner, and presenting WOLKE 9 (Cloud 9, G 2008) by Andreas Dresen, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. To this day, Ursula Werner's artistic work has been shaped by her extensive theater work, especially through a longstanding contract with the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Werner made her debut at the DEFA Feature Film Studio in 1962 with Wind von vorn (directed by Helmut Nitzschke), though the shoot was interrupted and the film was destroyed. In the following three decades, Werner had memorable roles in productions by Konrad Wolf, Herrmann Zschoche and Roland Oehme. She reached both a high and turning point in her career as an actress in WOLKE 9, playing the dressmaker Inge, who falls in love again at an advanced age. Disaster strikes when she leaves her husband. Werner was nominated for the European Film Awards for her intense and true-to-life portrait of Inge, going on to win the German and Bavarian film awards.
