Magic / Spirited: "Sarah Maldoror revisits poets Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor in Miami, she films the crossed glances and simple gestures of the two friends and it is when the poet Maya Angelou recites Césaire's verses under the branches of a tree that the film takes on its full meaning: Poetry is vibrant matter, and Sarah enjoys handling it.“ (Annouchka de Andrade) AIMÉ CÉSAIRE – LE MASQUE DES MOTS also illuminates the pan-African perspective of Négritude. The movement combined surrealist ideals with decolonial, tricontinental concerns. Maldoror's photographs of the 1987 symposium demonstrate the ethos of an "inquiring mind," to quote Césaire, and the common goal of resisting alienation.
