“The film looks at light, here directly at its source: the sun.” (James Benning) Shot from his garden in southern California, Benning shows ten skies, or ten “found paintings”, as he calls them. All of them are firmaments in which fumes from industrial chimneys, vapor trails from airplanes and the smoke from forest fires can be seen all too clearly. Benning describes the threatening footage of destruction as an anti-war artwork which shows the sort of beauty that humanity is obliterating. (mg)
