“Achetez le soleil!“ – “Buy the Sun!” rings out through the streets of Dakar. A group of children is selling the local daily newspaper and extolling its virtues at the top of their voices. Amongst them is the small Sili Laam, who ignores anyone else’s reservations and asserts herself as a newspaper seller with unwavering strength despite her physical fragility; it’s not for nothing that she signs a payment record with the image of the powerful sun. The second part of Mambéty’s unfinished “Stories of Small People” trilogy is a hymn to the courage of the street children of the Senegalese capital. (mg)
