The epic arc spanning eight decades and three generations (based on Mario Puzo's eponymous gangster novel) and the ensemble of outstanding actors make THE GODFATHER I-III one of the most legendary - unplanned - trilogies in film history.

THE GODFATHER PART II: 1901, 1917, the 1920s, the transition from the 1950s to the 1960s - in elliptical movements, Coppola weaves episodes from Vito Corleone's childhood in Italy and his criminal rise in America in the 1920s into a comprehensive plotline about Vito's son and successor, Michael (Al Pacino), who has maneuvered himself into the position of heir to the empire. The parallel montage reveals the historical change: as business connections become increasingly complex, but also because of Michael's obsessive quest for power, the family cohesion disintegrates.
