Film still from WINTER ADÉ: Two women stand on railway tracks. In the background is a field and trees. It looks dreary and grey.

A train journey across the GDR, from Zwickau to Sassnitz, in the last year before the fall of the Berlin Wall. On the train, in apartments or at people's workplaces, Helke Misselwitz talks to a number of different women: The economist Hiltrud, the factory worker and single mother Christine, the punks Kerstin and Anja, 85-year-old Margarete, and Erika Banhardt, who runs a children's home and is also a deputy mayor. Against the backdrop of passing East German landscapes and architecture, the women talk openly and candidly about their hopes, longings, and disappointments. (mg)
