One of Visconti's major epic projects, this film marks a final thematic and stylistic return to his neorealist beginnings. After the death of her husband and in search of a better life, Rosaria Parondi sets off with her five sons from the rural south to the industrial metropolis of Milan. But her hopes for work and social advancement fail. In contrast to his earlier neorealist films, in ROCCO Visconti drew on a range of different literary sources. (mg)
