A chorus of different off-screen voices narrates and comments on scenes of interwoven love stories that converge at the French embassy in Kolkata in the mid-1930s. Anne-Marie Stretter (Delphine Seyrig), her lover Michael Richardson (Claude Mann), the Vice-Consul of Lahore (Michael Lonsdale), who is in love with Stretter, and an Austrian attaché (Mathieu Carrière) meet in mirror-lined rooms and neglected gardens. A complex film poem about passion and torpor, longing and ennui, INDIA SONG resembles a multi-layered mosaic of moods, atmospheres, and memories. (mg)
