Canada in 1898, at the height of the gold rush. A small group of German immigrants sets off for the gold fields on the Klondike River with horses, covered wagons, onion powder, cameras and banjos in the hope of a better life. Emily Meyer (Nina Hoss), a single woman, travels with them. The wilderness becomes denser, disorientation grows, complications arise (broken wheel, bear trap), exhaustion and conflict set in. Emily refuses to turn back even when most of the company has died. This was the first time that Arslan told a historical story, on the basis of eyewitness testimonies and in the form of a late Western. With harsh guitar riffs, interrupted by fades to black, he emphasized the monotony and repetitiveness of a grueling journey and the barrenness of the landscape. And there was also a showdown, a standard element of the genre. (bik)
