In this adaptation of Ray's eponymous crime novel, the detective Feluda becomes embroiled in the theft of a valuable statue of the elephant-headed god Ganesh while on holiday in the holy city of Varanasi. When a murder occurs, other suspects come into Feluda's focus. „The movie could be Ray's nod to John Huston's classic detective story The Maltese Falcon. [...] There are many wonderful twists and turns that show that Ray clearly had fun working on this film, which is characterized by a clever progression of developments and a witty style that is entirely compatible with the character of a detective story.“ (Gene Moskowitz) (gv)
