MANHATTAN STORIES shows everyday life in New York at the end of the 90s. People on the underground are not yet looking at smartphones but reading books. There are still answering machines and gentrification has not yet fully taken over the city. Thomas Schadt and Susanne Kammermeier accompany seven friends through "their" city with a tranquil eye for everyday details. They go to Chinatown and to the office, for a workout and to the launderette. Above all, however, Kammermeier and Schadt accompany their protagonists as they confront the anonymity of the metropolis with verve. Nuremberg-born Thomas Schadt is one of Germany's most important documentarists. The director, author, cameraman and producer has received numerous awards for his films, in which he observes the everyday and the historical. He follows political and cultural figures, and also explores microcosms such as Wall Street or Berlin newspaper editorial offices. In 2023, he donated his production archive to the Deutsche Kinemathek. (Klaudia Wick)
