Slowly, places are composed of surfaces, reflections, shadows and cones of light: a ship's deck, the wall of a quay, a train, a lighthouse. The cool, sharply contrasted no-man's-land, observed with utmost precision, is the setting for Tarr's Simenon adaptation: a noir-esque "thriller" about the switchman Maloin, who observes a murder from a lighthouse. A suitcase of money that has fallen into the water offers a momentary escape from his meagre existence. Immersed in boundless blackness, A LONDONI FÉRFI offers an inside view of a frozen life. (mg)
