It is the slanted lines, the crooked walls and distorted perspectives that comprise the iconic "Caligari look", but also: the painted shadows. They are artificially applied in jagged lines to streets, floors and walls in apartments; even the cast shadows on the face of the showman Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauß) come from expressionist chiaroscuro brushstrokes, with which the small town of Holstenwall is lined. The attraction of the local fair is the somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt), who wanders through the small town, murdering at night. (mg)
