A film of light trails, electrification, shadows, and shading. Together with cinematographers Charles Rosher and Karl Struss, who won the first cinematography Oscar for SUNRISE in 1929, Murnau created complex lighting compositions for each location in the film. In this love triangle drama, a glamorous urban beauty (Margaret Livingston) passes a summer holiday in the country, where she seduces a young villager (George O’Brien) and convinces him to kill his wife (Janet Gaynor). The love-struck man initially agrees, but comes to his senses at the last moment. (mg)
