While under contract with the SFA, Leyda undertook several research trips to other European FIAF film archives, including the Nederlands Filmmuseum in Amsterdam in 1967, where he was able to watch films from the estate of entrepreneur and cinemaowner Jean Desmet. Leyda was full of enthusiasm for the wild years of early cinema, which his student Tom Gunning later termed the “Cinema of Attractions“. At the end of the 80s, film scholar Heide Schlüpmann also became acquainted with the Jean Desmet collection. She presents seven films from five countries that make reference to the cinema as a place of secrets, dangers and discoveries. With a live piano accompaniment by Eunice Martins.
