Film still from HANDTINTING: A monochrome turquoise picture of a laughing woman.

It can seem pretty difficult in the meantime to bear in-between spaces: between art and cinema, theory and practice, institutional events and independent ones. Between before and after, this side and the other side, here and there. Between the aesthetic and the political. Between dream and reality, loud and quiet, analogue and digital.
Between two films, the light goes on – or it stays off. The images and sounds of the previous film continue to reverberate, body and spirit relax for a second or are distracted by the need to grab drinks or snacks in the darkness of the cinema. The question of what is coming next burrows into the unknown film that is now to follow.
This short film program examines the “before the film” and “after the film” and what happens in between them. With sounds and images and appearances by Bruce Baillie, Ibrahim Shaddat, Ayse Erkmen, Clarissa Thieme, Maria Thereza Alves, Haytham el-Wardany, Joyce Wieland. (stss)
