German avantgarde director Ulrike Ottingeris closely linked to Arsenal, which distributes (nearly) all her films and has presented them in numerous programmes and retrospectives. The 47-minute LAOKOON & SÖHNE (West Germany 1973) is screening in Hanover. “Get high on change” is what protagonist Esmeralda del Rio strives for. In a country in which only women live, she is looking for new sensations and takes on a series of female roles while gripped by the frenzy of change – the last of which is that of a “small gigolo”. The programme also includes Ottinger’s short films SUPERBIA – DER STOLZ (West Germany 1986) And USINIMAGE (West Germany 1987).
