After being imprisoned for ten years in National Socialist concentration camp, Peter Kuban (Vittorio Gassman) succeeds in travelling to New York as a blind passenger. There the authorities prevent the stateless immigrant from entering the country. His only hope is the exemption for people who rendered outstanding services to the Allied cause during the war. He thus flees the ship and starts a desperate search for a former US solider called Tom who he hid from the Germans during the war. He find an ally in the form of the unemployed Maggie Summers (Gloria Grahame).
The start of THE GLASS WALL (which has German-Italian-Jewish star Vittorio Gassman in the leading role) already leaves its mark: a montage of immigrants newly arrived in the US who have fled poverty and persecution and are hoping for salvation.
