To feed his family, Antonio works as a day laborer in Rome. After a employment agency finally finds him the salaried job he’s been yearning for as a billboard poster, his most important means of working, his bicycle, is stolen. Together with his young son Burno, he sets out on a desperate search for the bike and the thief. The film’s lively narration, sensibility and social message free of sentimentality helped turn the film into an enormous international success and also made neorealism popular with wider audiences for a time.
