zu dem KalenderKino achteinhalb celebrates its 35th anniversary in May. Throughout the whole month, there are special screenings that honor the different aspects of the cinema’s history. As a long-term partner, Arsenal will also be a guest at the celebrations and is bringing the idea of the pub cinema created by GESCHICHTEN VOM KÜBELKIND (Edgar Reitz, Ula Stöckl, West Germany 1971) to Saarbrücken. The Kino achteinhalb sees the Kübelkind as a kindred spirit. The anarchic, antisocial character battles restrictive social conditions across 22 episodes of different lengths. As a small studio cinema in Saarbrücken’s hip going out district, Kino achteinhalb was an outsider in the local cinema scene, rubbing people up the wrong way just like the film’s protagonist, shattering the frame and remaining above all impossible to get rid of! Audience participation was always an integral part of how the program took shape. That’s why the “Kübelkind menu”, from which the audience can choose which of the short films will be shown, fits wonderfully into the cinema’s tradition. (Markus Huppert)
