The first film that Binka Zhelyazkova directed on her own was written by her husband Hristo Ganev and was based on the couple’s own experiences. In Sofia during World War II, Veska joins a group of resistance fighters that carries out acts of sabotage. Even her first encounter with Dimo, with whom she goes on to develop a tender relationship, is overshadowed when a German Luftwaffe plane rips through the sky above them, a symbol of ever-present danger. With stylistic assurance, great inventiveness, and atmospheric intensity, Zhelyazkova tells of the conflict between ideals and reality and of the disappointment and disillusionment of a generation.
