Al-khoroug lel-nahar

A day and a night in the life of Soad and her mother, who look after their bedridden father and husband. There is tension in the air. Soad has always put her own life on the back burner. In the evening, she leaves the apartment and wanders through Cairo by night. As hinted at by the Arabic title, which translates as "stepping out into the light of day", the end of the night and the new day offer potential change. A quiet, focused, extraordinary debut.

Vulnerability and Resistance: As my grandfather's presence in the country becomes increasingly problematic, my mother gradually decides to never touch a camera again, my father becomes obsessively convinced of his own disappearance, and something almost miraculous happens in 1976 in Montreux: Nina Simone comes back from retirement.
