Dead Souls' Vacation

Levan used to be a famous bassist in Tbilisi and leader of the “Dead Souls’ Vacation” band. Now in his mid-40s, he lives with his mother Lamara in a cramped flat without any money. His musical creativity shines forth again and again, even if it is held in check in his everyday life due to the living situation and his alcoholism. Where he’s not out and about in Tbilisi, meeting acquaintances and old musician colleagues, he spends his time arguing with Lamara, although their clashes are always accompanied by loving, humorous undertones. Director Keko Chelidze succeeds in crafting the intimate portrait of a complex mother-and-son relationship as well as that of a fragile artist for whom they no longer seems any place in today’s Georgia.
