With its schematic script, shot entirely on location with several amateurs and little-known supporting actors, Emmer's unpretentious feature debut shows the director’s preference for documentary. DOMENICA D'AGOSTO, which came after 20 documentary works, would kick off five films made with Mastroianni before 1957. Playing Ercole, a traffic cop looking for a spot for his pregnant fiancée, this was the actor’s first lengthy appearance in a film of note. However, still unknown, he was denied his own voice and was dubbed by Alberto Sordi.(hjf)
