Elegantly staged and shot in black and white (by Satyajit Roy cameraman Subrata Mitra and edited by US documentary filmmaker Les Blank among others), the film, which is based on a folktale and set in the 17th century during the rule of the Ming dynasty, tells of a young widow who is confronted with her desires when an officer is stationed in her home. In keeping with the social norms and her standing, she relinquishes passion and love and despairs at the callousness with which personal happiness passes her by.
