Around 1980, there were more women studying at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin than men, including Ute Aurand, Bärbel Freund, and Ulrike Pfeiffer, who have worked together again and again since that period. Their films are experimental in form and narrated from a clear female perspective. ANZIEHEN is to a certain extent the manifesto of this group of young women, who were supposed to conquer the camera and from then on use the medium for self-interrogation as well as self-assertion. The film was conceived of as a camera exercise and was only preserved via a worn-out working print. Following its restoration, its qualities can finally be seen on the big screen. SCHWEIGEND INS GESPRÄCH VERTIEFT is Ute Aurand’s captivatingly beautiful first film, a manifesto for a female aesthetic, “made with a special, sometimes unintentional courage” (Ute Aurand). GALA by Ulrike Pfeiffer fuses black-and-white footage of a nocturnal student party with color images of a traditional dance competition to grandiose, hallucinogenic effect. In OH! DIE VIER JAHRESZEITEN, Aurand and Pfeiffer conquer the iconic squares of Berlin, Paris, Moscow, and London in swooping images and rapid series of cuts. Maria Lang wrote enthusiastically: “OH! is a happy film, just as there are people who are simply there and shine.” BÄRBEL UND CHARLY (D 1994) shows filmmaker Bärbel Freund and Karl Heil in private and public situations, together with the camera, a collaged portrait of a couple emerges. TULIPAN (Germany 2002) by Ute Aurand and Bärbel Freund has flowers bloom to bring the program to a close. (mk)
