Asta Nielsen – actress, film writer, producer - is considered to be the first cinema star in film history and a film artist of the greatest international significance. As an autonomous actress, she developed her roles independently and had an influential impact on all the production processes of her films. With her extraordinary characteristic physical expression, in HAMLET (Svend Gade and Heinz Schall, G 1920) she plays a Danish princess, who dresses as a boy and calls herself Hamlet, the young prince. When the king is murdered, Hamlet seeks revenge, using the arrival of a troupe of actors to unmask the killer. "The soulful look, the slender figure, her strange, cultivated pallor made Asta Nielsen the perfect Shakespearean Prince of Denmark – exactly as we wanted to see this prince." (Lotte H. Eisner) (mg)
