The small village of Baranya is as good as extinct, as there are neither jobs nor any kind of cultural life. Only one family still lives there, as well as the old Erzsi who has spent her whole life in the village and wants to die there. Anti earns a good living in the wood industry, but he is far away from his family in Baranya. When his son Andris is admitted to a boarding school in the city and leaves home, his wife Juli feels increasingly lonely and sinks into sadness. She tries to find comfort in faith, but her despair grows.
