La expropiación

This cinematic exploration of the Unidad Popular’s land reform addresses the collision between political ideologies and reality—the contradictions that emerge from generalizations. The story of a landowner who wants to transfer his plots of land to his workers before the agricultural reform is narrated on various different levels and interrupted again and again. The sympathy with the ideas and optimism of the policy is tinged with derision. Shot in Chile in 1971, work on LA EXPROPIACIÓN was interrupted by Ruiz’s exile. Following the 1973 putsch, he first went to West Germany and later to Paris, where the film was completed and received its world premiere in 1974.
