Giovanni Pontano (Marcello Mastroianni), a successful writer, and his wife Lidia (Jeanne Moreau) have been married for 10 years. Together, they visit their terminally ill friend Tommaso (Bernhard Wicki) in hospital. In the evening, they go to the party of a big industrialist. Giovanni takes an interest in the daughter of the host, Valentina (Monica Vitti), while Lidia lets the attentions of a guest wash over her with apathy. Without any dramatic effect, Antonioni creates a geometry of solitude, filming the streets and buildings of Milan with a cold beauty. (hjf)
