Decolonization / Debt / Migration: A war drama about a group of rebels made capitive by their Dutch colonial masters. The film follows discussions about colonialism and freedom though the chess games of a prison guard and an inmate. The prison guard is a young Dutchman who fought in the resistance against the Nazis. The inmate chooses to be known as a teacher. A rare feature film about wartime Indonesia that shows mental struggle as opposed to physical/military struggle.
