“As the country suffers from renewed violent conflict, we dedicate our festival contribution to the people of Sudan. The work of Hussein Shariffe (1934–2005), an artistfilmmaker, has gained new life in archival and curatorial initiatives within and beyond Sudan. Since 2019, Shariffe’s daughter, Eiman Hussein, has worked with Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (Arsenal), Talal Afifi (Sudan Film Factory), filmmaker Tamer El Said (Cimatheque – Alternative Film Centre), translator and writer Haytham el Wardany, and King’s College London colleagues including Erica Carter, to retrieve and recirculate a documentary and experimental film oeuvre spanning four decades. Shariffe’s filmography is of significance as part of a culture of resistance, whose task he describes as to ‘reclaim, rename and re-inhabit the land.’ The work with partners including the Sudan Film Factory, British Film Institute, and the Sudan Memory digital archiving project, addresses those questions with a digitization and curatorial practice that places Shariffe’s films in dialogue with his document archive’s multiple and transnationally dispersed voices.” (Erica Carter, Eiman Hussein)
