Theatre of Cruelty (Goor va gahvareh)

THEATRE OF CRUELTY references modular archival tactics as an ongoing series of site-specific and improvised reconfiguration and transformation of fragmented materials, memories and ephemera staged through the logic of montage. GOOR VA GAHVAREH (Farsi: Tomb and cradle) consists of multiple screens laying on the ground, illuminating the space via archival moving images that act as a fluctuating platform embracing highly personal and historical temporalities. These fragmented realities are made, found, collected and imagined by the artist and later staged as an enigmatic theater of its own existence, each becoming a personal altar that creates narrative through mise en abyme (space within space/ story within story) as a reflection of psychological method. The possibility of improvised stages lets the viewers play the role of the narrator and imagine diverse realities. GOOR VA GAHVAREH meditates on liminal passages and the very logic of these intervals; the psychological passage of the self, through moments of departure and arrival/return as a migrant.
