Akademie der Künste: Architecture and Film

Arsenal has a long history with the Akademie der Künste (AdK): from the founding of the association in 1963 till the opening of the first Arsenal cinema in Welserstraße on January 3, 1970, the Freunde der deutschen Kinemathek (today: Arsenal - Institute for Film and Video Art) did not have its own auditorium. Film screenings took place at various locations, mostly at the building on Hanseatenweg. The International Forum of New Cinema (today: Berlinale Forum), founded in 1971, was based there for decades, and the group exhibitions of Forum Expanded took place at the AdK from 2015 to 2018.

The “Think: Film” congress organized at the AdK in 2012 was a collaboration between Arsenal and the filmmaker, artist and author Heinz Emigholz on the occasion of his retirement from the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), where he was professor for Experimental Film Design from 1993 to 2013. In the 1990s, he presented a program with this title every Tuesday at Arsenal. The “Architecture and Film” program resonates with that legendary film series, which was very popular among UdK students and others.

All the films will be introduced by Heinz Emigholz.
