In Focus: Hafsia Herzi

Hafsia Herzi (*1987) is a staple in French cinema. Since drawing attention to herself as a non-professional actor nearly 20 years ago, she has made a remarkable career for herself as an actress and since 2019 also as a director. Hafsia Herzi is from an Algerian/Tunisian family and grew up in Marseille. She gained immediate renown in 2007 with her role in the film LA GRAINE ET LE MULET (The Secret of the Grain), for which she was cast on the street by director Abdellatif Kechiche and received numerous prizes as best upcoming actress. Following this success, she moved to Paris, completed her training as an actress and has since been a constant presence on the big screen with her intense, concentrated performances and laconic smile. She was also able to achieve success behind the camera – both her films celebrated their premiere in Cannes. We are happy to be able to present a selection of four films featuring Hafsia Herzi as an actress as well as her three directorial works (two for the big screen, one for television) as part of the Französische Filmwoche.
